This best souvlaki platter filled with typical Greek food like chicken souvlaki skewers, tzatziki sauce, pita bread, feta cheese and olives. It looks beautiful and delicious for gatherings and it makes the atmosphere more festive. Your guest gonna love it!
The great thing about making a platter is that you can put your own favorite foods on it. And the more variety on your platter, the more guests can enjoy!
This souvlaki platter is one of my favorite platters. The smokey flavor of the chicken souvlaki pairs perfectly with the fresh tzatziki, along with fresh salad, the feta cheese an olives for a salty and bright flavor. It will amaze your guests!
It is made with simple ingredients with low prices. Ideal if you want to celebrate your party but don’t want to spend too much money!
What is a platter?
Platters are large boards that are used for different types of food: from meats, cheese, vegetables and fruits. You can use them for a larger group of people filled with appetizers or (healthy) snacks.
Souvlaki platter components
Each platter often conforms to a variation of certain foods that should be on it, making it a good mix with different flavors that balance well with each other.
Souvlaki is a typical Greek dish. That’s why you want to use food from the Greek cuisine. The idea is to make your own kind of Souvlaki platter, but I have listed some examples of what you can add on your platter down below.
1. Salad
A traditional Greek salad often contains fresh cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, iceberg lettuce and bell bell pepper.
For my Souvlaki Platter, I used mini cucumbers and cherrie tomatoes myself. It is easier for guests to grab cherrie tomatoes than vine tomatoes that have been cut into pieces. The moisture of the tomatoes makes it easier to mess up the plate.
2. Dips and toppings
- A typical Greek dip that goes well with Souvlaki is Tzatziki! It is almost impossible to miss on a Souvlaki Platter. The freshness of the tzatziki balances the savory chicken so well.Another yummy topping that also goes well on a souvlaki platter is humus!
- As a topping on my feta cheese, I used some thyme, freshly ground pepper and capers myself. It gives an extra spicy hint.
3. Bread
For my souvlaki platter, I used Greek pita bread, which is often eaten with Souvlaki.
Greek pita bread is more thick, fluffier and softer than standard pita bread that most people are familiar with.
I bought this pita bread at the market at a tappas stall but they also sell it in supermarkets. A great sub is flatbread!
4. Meat
This, of course, goes without saying… But what would a souvlaki platter be without souvlaki?!
Traditional souvlaki is made from pork, but I used chicken souvlaki. Lamb and beef souvlaki can also be used.
5. Cheese
The Greek cuisine has several cheeses but the most famous cheese of them all is feta cheese! It is delicious to combine with the tomatoes and cucumber.
Feta cheese is also used often in Greek salads.
6. Vegetables
Grilled vegetables are delicious on a souvlaki platter. It gives a more Mediterranean touch to your platter. I used eggplant, but grilled zucchini or peppers are also delicious!
7. Olives
Greece is known for its olives. The famous Kalamata olives from Greece fit well on your souvlaki platter.
Black and green olives are fine too and are often cheaper.
8. Herbs
I used dill and arugula for my souvlaki platter.
Other herbs that are also commonly used in the Greek cuisine are oregano, thyme, parsley and mint. They are nice to use as a topping on your dips or meat.
How to make a souvlaki platter step by step
In order to prepare your souvlaki platter in the best possible way, I will describe step by step how to do this.
After you have chosen a nice platter, you can begin to prepare it.
- It is helpful to always start by placing baking paper on the areas where food will be placed that contain oil or moisture such as meat, grilled vegetables or feta. This keeps your platter clean.
- Then place the food that you serve in small bowls, like tzatziki and olives, on the platter. Spread them a little bit through your platter so that you can fill it up with other food.
- Then start filling the food that will be on the baking sheet like the souvlaki, grilled vegetables and feta.
- Next, you can fill your platter with fresh vegetables like cucumber and cherrie tomatoes. It’s nice to spread this out over your platter so there is something tasty to grab on every side!
- Place the pita bread on the side where it doesn’t touch any moist food. This will keep your pita bread from getting wet.
- Fill the empty holes with herbs like dill or arugula. Optionally you can sprinkle some seasoning on top of your feta cheese and add some red onion onto your plate.
Souvlaki platter tips
- Don’t forget to place spoons, spreaders or skewers on your platter. This way guests don’t have to grab the food with their hands so the food stays clean.
- If you have any holes left on your platter you can fill them with herbs. You can use the herbs as decoration.
- Use nice small bowls and use toppings (as described above). This makes your platter more beautiful and food that looks nice is often more appealing to your guests.
- Of course, if you don’t have time to make your own dips, you can also go to the supermarket.
- It is nice for guests if there are napkins next to your souvlaki platter.
- Keep in mind that some dips cannot last very long outside the refrigerator. Often these stay good at room temperature for up to 2 hours. So make sure your platter is not on the table too long before guests arrive!
